During a wet and rainy season, many buildings may discover a water seepage issue in their foundation. This was the case with our featured Project of the Month from contractor Kidd Bros Construction Ltd. in Peterborough, ON.

As we know, the enemy of all basements and foundations is water. Moisture around the building naturally seeps through porous concrete, leaving any material in the room damp and damaged. There are many methods and products to apply to concrete in order to prevent, combat or correct water damage. CPD Construction Products have the options and can advise the best solution for your project – big or small.

In our featured project, a residential foundation was showing signs of water seepage and needed to be repaired. Kidd Bros Construction along with Doughty Masonry Centre determined the best solution was to fill the existing concrete block foundation with CPD® Non-Shrink Grout (Pre-Mix). This particular product is a pre-blended, ready-to-use cement base grout containing non-ferrous fluidifiers and anti-shrinkage compounds accurately blended with graded siliceous aggregate and portland cement. It is available pre-blended and requires only the addition of water at the job site, making the application process quick and easy.

Access holes were drilled into the existing block foundation wall, and then the CPD® Non-Shrink Grout (Pre-Mix) product was pumped inside. After allowing the product to dry, the holes were patched and sealed.

Kidd Bros Construction Ltd. has been using CPD® Non-Shrink Grout (Pre-Mix) with great success by reinforcing block walls and stopping the intrusion of water.

Exposed Concrete: Polished Finish with CPD® Construction Products

Exposed concrete floors are suitable for various applications and can be considered for many projects. They are particularly useful for heavy loads or traffic, or when combined with under-floor heating for continuous and efficient space heating. As a finish, they can appear utilitarian or luxurious depending very much upon the chosen materials and installation techniques.

The most prevalent texture or finish for internal exposed concrete floors is polished – either power-trowelled for a smooth solid appearance, or diamond-ground to expose the aggregates. Highly polished concrete floors have become a popular and practical design choice for many commercial warehouses, studios, galleries, office buildings and other high traffic areas.

CPD® Construction Products were recently used in the rehab of an existing space for The Physio Studio in Oshawa, Ontario. Toronto area concrete floor specialists, FenixFinish Polished Concrete, exposed the existing 5,000 sq. ft. concrete floor for the new tenants who required a professional, durable and economical floor option. After exposing the concrete, Cipadeck® LP was used to densify and dustproof the concrete floor, then polished and finished with Cipadeck® Shield; a single component water-based, durable protective coating. The result is a beautiful, dust-free, low maintenance floor with an aesthetically pleasing finish.

Big Construction Projects – Quality Concrete Products

CPD Construction products are everywhere…even when you don’t see them!

Do you take the DVP to work and have to deal with the summer construction? Did you recently order something from Amazon? Have you noticed a trend towards the construction of more wind farms in Canada? We are proud to say that CPD products have been a part of all of these projects. Needless to say, it has been a busy summer for the CPD team!

One of the highest-profile construction projects in the GTA this summer is the rehabilitation work on four critical bridges spanning the Don Valley Parkway in Toronto. Often referred to as the DVP, the highway is a 15-kilometre long expressway that runs from the Gardiner Expressway in downtown Toronto to Highway 401 and is one of the City’s most vital transit arterial roads. The city of Toronto estimates that approximately 135,000 vehicles travel daily on the Don Valley Parkway. Due to the constant high volume on the DVP and Gardiner Expressway, the City of Toronto states the purpose of this construction is to “ensure that the bridges meet today’s standards and remain safe for vehicles and pedestrians into the future”.

The contractor for the bridgework is the Toronto company Torbridge Construction Ltd. The CPD Construction products used on the project are:

• #920 Concrete Sealer WB is a water-based acrylic curing, sealing, and dust-proofing compound for concrete. It is available in clear, metro grey and special white. For this project, Metro Grey was the best choice.
• CPD Fastcrete Ultra: A unique micro silica, hydraulic cement-based patching compound used for interior and exterior concrete repair. It is a fast setting high strength compound that is similar in colour to concrete.

As for other large projects, CPD supplied all concrete sealers to Amazon’s new 1.02 million square-foot fulfilment centre near Ottawa, Ontario. James Beach, Broccolini Construction’s head of real estate and development, says over 1000 workers from various trades have been on site helping to construct the building. It is a large-scale project that will ultimately offer thousands of jobs to local Canadians, and in turn, stimulate our economy. According to Amazon, the facility is planned to be up and running by the busy Christmas holiday season in 2019. It has been a great honour to provide materials to a high profile project such as the Amazon fulfillment centre.

The contractor for this project is Slavko Concrete Finishing Inc. and worked with the following CPD Construction products on the project:

• Consolideck LS/CS – a lithium-silicate sealer, hardener & densifier for concrete
• Cipadeck Cure & Seal WB Clear: a water-based acrylic curing, sealing and dust-proofing compound for concrete. It can be used in various applications beyond the Amazon project, such as cast in place concrete, bridges, curb and gutter, sewer pipe, parking structures, etc.

Another large and exciting project we are proud to be a part of, the Whitla Wind Turbine Facility in Western Canada. The facility is located 15Km south of Bow Island, Alberta in Forty Mile County and sits on approximately 33,000 acres of land. Phase 1 construction began in 2018 and will consist of 56 wind turbines when completed by the end of 2019.

Construction is on track this summer and foundations for the turbines have begun with the first tower now complete. Each wind turbine foundation consists of a concrete spread footing approximately 10 feet deep and 60 feet in diameter. About 53 truckloads of concrete are needed per foundation, adding up to a total of 2,968 truckloads for the 56 foundations required for the project. CPD Construction Product CIPADITE E-500 GROUT was selected for use in this project, as it is a self-leveling, 100% solids epoxy grout with excellent strength and chemical resistant properties. It is also highly suitable for grouting structural column bases like those used on the wind turbine project.

Phase 1 of the wind turbine project has the potential to generate enough electricity to power 67,000 Alberta homes annually (based on average household energy consumption of 12,000 kWh per year)

CIPADAM S-15 is a clear, penetrating, breathable sealer that contains a 15 % solution of silane in an alcohol carrier. The CIPADM S-40 has the same chemical properties but contains a higher level of silane.

Both products chemically react with concrete and most masonry surfaces to produce a long-lasting water repellent effect. This material’s small molecular structure allows for maximum penetration into any porous material to form a smooth sealed surface. The application of the CIPADAM product line is a two-step system. First, the surface requires a base coat, which prevents the penetration of chloride ions through cement materials, and then is sealed with a colourless acrylic top coat Cipadeck Paver & Concrete Sealer.

The Kingsdown Canada project, located at the intersection of Highway 27 and the 407 in Vaughan, Ontario will create approximately 246,000 sq. ft. of new space for the company. The facility will be home to new technological and sleep science advancements for this 100-year-old manufacturer of premium sleep systems. Just as the basis of a good night’s sleep is an investment in a quality foundation, CPD® was happy to provide a solid base for Kingsdown Canada’s new home.

United Floors Ltd. was awarded the contract for the concrete floor finishing. They selected the CPD® Floor Hardener Pre-Mix (Premium), and Cipadeck® FlexFoam Expansion Joint Filler as the products of choice for the project.

CPD® Floor Hardener Pre-Mix (Premium) is a factory blend of Portland cement and non-metallic floor hardener and is ready to use. Plasticizers and dispersants are incorporated into the mix to ensure ease of placement. This hardener provides a high strength, hardwearing surface for industrial and commercial applications such as the Kingsdown Canada project.

CPD®’s latest innovation, Cipadeck® FlexFoam Expansion Joint Filler is a chemical resistant; UV stable non-absorbent, compressible foam that was chosen for its light weight and ease of cutting or forming in the field, thus minimizing waste. Highway 9 Bridge Rehabilitation:

May 2018 CPD Project of the Month

Southern Ontario’s Highway 400 serves as the main traffic artery for some of Canada’s fastest-growing communities, such as Aurora, Vaughn, and Orangeville. Highway 9 crosses over Highway 400 just west of Newmarket, at about the midway point between Toronto and Barrie.

Over the last few years, users of Highway 9 have discovered that accessing Highway 400 can be stressful and time-consuming, especially during peak hours when traffic can slow to a flat-out crawl.

To address the problem, and prepare for heavier use due to urban expansion, the province committed almost $80 million to rehabilitate the Highway 9 bridge. The contract also included:

• Widening of Highway 400 to accommodate future HOV lanes
• Reconstruction of the Highway 9 interchange
• Realignment of Highway 9 with South Canal Bank Road
• Adding four structural culverts
• Expanding the commuter parking lot
• Improving lighting and drainage
• Repairing of all associated highway features necessary to complete the project

The entire project spans 3.2 kilometers and has a completion date of October 2018. Only the best trades, equipment, and products could be relied upon to fulfill this contract, and when it came the time, CPD^® Construction Products was ready to deliver.

Contractor

The Miller Group was hired to oversee the entire project. With over 100 years of road, highway, and infrastructure experience, The Miller Group was the perfect choice to ensure that the contract was delivered to specification and within the acceptable time frame.

Miller subcontracted the bridge portion of the project to Parkland Bridge & Concrete Group Ltd. Located in Markham, Parkland has built a reputation for quality heavy-duty bridge construction. The Parkland team also knows where to get the right equipment and products to fulfill their projects, and turned to Sunbelt Rentals for recommendations.

Vendor

As one of North America’s largest equipment rental companies, Sunbelt Rentals has more than 625 locations that serve British Columbia, Alberta, Ontario, and Saskatchewan. Sunbelt supplies quality products, tools, and equipment in the commercial, residential, industrial, municipal, and specialized service industries, as well as to the weekend do-it-yourself handyman.

Parkland concrete contacted their local Sunbelt location for products to complete the Highway 9 bridge rehabilitation project. The Sunbelt team delivered great product recommendations, including CPD® Rapidcrete and CPD® Fastcrete Ultra, to get the job done.

CPD® Rapidcrete (Fiber Grade)

CPD^® Rapidcrete (Fiber Grade) is a ready-to-use, fast setting, high strength no slump, patching material that’s perfect when downtime is at a premium, and where low temperatures restrict the proper curing of ordinary cement-based repair compounds.

Its non-metallic, non-staining and non-toxic properties make it perfect for such uses as repairing parking decks, ramps, loading dock area, concrete bridges, and even indoor concrete floors in warehouses and factories.

CPD® Fastcrete Ultra

Residential Balcony Rehabilitation, Port Hope:

April 2018 CPD Project of the Month

When you’re a landlord, the safety of your tenants should be paramount, especially if you own a multi-unit building. If your units also have balconies, regular inspections need to be carried out to ensure that safety standards are being met.

Over time, especially in areas with fluctuations in temperature and varying weather conditions, once-solid balconies can begin to show signs of wear. Many balcony foundations can suffer from cracks, allowing water to drip through. Railings can also start to look old and tired and become unstable, and the balconies’ steel reinforcements might begin to show through the concrete due to wear, appearing rusted and worn out.

It’s a major job to refresh balconies, but it was a project that the owners of the low-rise apartment building at Holland Court, 24 Queen Street in Port Hope, Ontario, were willing to invest in to ensure the safety of their residents, and improve the look of the building exterior.

Their specialities include complete design work, field review services, investigation, and project evaluation for commercial buildings, industrial structures, office developments, and residential edifices.

Because of their excellent understanding of the codes and standards involving balcony construction, BDS Ltd. was hired by the owners of Holland Court to work on the almost 30 balconies that were showing signs of age and becoming an aesthetic and safety concern.

To help secure the equipment and products needed to complete the project at Holland Court, BDS contractors turned to their local Rent All Centre in the nearby town of Coburg.

Independently owned since 1973, this proudly Canadian company rents construction equipment, lawn and garden, carpentry, and various other tools and equipment to everyone from the weekend do-it-yourself crowd to major contractors. For the Holland Court project, the staff at Rent All Centre recommended one of toughest mortars available: CPD® Fastcrete Ultra.

Product: CPD® Fastcrete Ultra

CPD® Fastcrete Ultra is a two-component polymer modified, fast-setting repair mortar. Similar to the colour of concrete, this product is also enhanced with a micro-silica and Migrating Corrosion Inhibitor® by Cortec to reduce rebar corrosion.

This makes Fastcrete Ultra perfect to use as a structural repair material for vertical, overhead, and horizontal concrete surfaces, whether on, above, or below grade.

Sample uses include parking garages, balconies, building envelopes, bridges, tunnels, dams, and industrial applications. Its bond strength, resistance to freeze-thaw, and high compressive and flexural strengths provide the tough, durable performance needed to repair and rehabilitate the balconies at Holland Court so that they retain strength and reliability for years through the changing and often inclement local weather patterns.

Project Outcome

Thanks to the teams at BDS Ltd. and Rent All Centre, the balconies at Holland Court were successfully repaired and refreshed with CPD® Fastcrete Ultra, providing a renewed look to the building’s exterior, raising the building’s value and enhancing the comfort and safety of the residents.

Mont Sainte-Marguerite, QC Wind Farm Project:

March 2018 CPD Project of the Month

• 46 Siemens 3.2 MW turbines – 147.2 MW
• Developer : Système Energie Renouvelable (RES)
• General Contractor: Borea Construction
• CPD Non-Shrink Grout H.E.S.- SR

Mont Sainte-Marguerite Wind is a 147 MW project located approximately 50 kilometers south of Québec City, in the Chaudière-Appalachia region of Québec. Borea Construction, under the supervision of Pattern Development’s construction management team and RES Canada, was the General contractor in charge of the project. The project has a 25-year power purchase agreement with Hydro-Québec.

When the Borea project management team was looking for a non-ferrous, non-shrink grout for this project, the specifications stated that they could consider either an epoxy or a cementitious grout. The team quickly decided to go with a cementitious grout since it required less work, less testing, and follow-up (lower total cost). They also wanted a grout that was pumpable (for fast placement), easy to work with (that can be easily placed in tight openings that can vary from 25 mm to 40 mm) and that could reach the required compressive strength prior to 28 days in order to facilitate tower & turbine erection.

After an in-depth analysis of the different competitive products, the CPD Non-Shrink Grout (pre-mix) HES-SR was chosen since it met all of their requirements and offered the following compressive strength performance – which allowed them to do full erection of tower sections, turbine and blades prior to 28 days:

3 days: 65 MPa
7 days: 80 MPa
28 days: 90 MPa

Results: The general foreman, the site supervisors, and the workers were very pleased with the performance of the CPD Non-Shrink Grout (pre-mix) HES-SR grout and the general foreman’s comments were:

“the CPD Non-Shrink Grout (pre-mix) HES-SR grout is easy to work with and gives incredible breaks, it allowed us to grout up-to- 3 towers per day and to quickly start with the erection of the tower”.

Note: the product CPD Cipadeck Cure & Seal was also used as it allowed the crew to proceed with the work on the next tower without having to come back to take care of the curing.
